Patient support

The meter is just the start.

We designed access to a glucose meter alongside pharmacy benefits for test strips. Eligibility checks, device delivery and repeat supplies were part of the same plan.

My role
Project leadership

A glucose meter is a one-off purchase. Test strips are an ongoing expense. I led a program that considered both: who could receive the meter, how it would reach them and how pharmacy benefits could support later strip purchases.

Define who the offer is for

An insulin prescription qualified a patient for a meter at a nominal price. It gave the team a practical eligibility rule.

The prescription showed that a patient qualified for the offer. It did not tell us how often they would use the device.

Plan the supplies as well as the device

We connected eligibility checks and device delivery with pharmacy offers for test strips. These included benefits linked to purchases, with different levels of support. Rules varied by program version and pharmacy network.

My work brought together the patient group, offer, delivery partners and purchase checks. A low-cost meter was useful only if the design also considered the supplies patients would need later.

Bring the parts into one program

The program gave eligible patients a way to obtain the meter, alongside pharmacy benefits for strip purchases.

The lesson was to design the first purchase and ongoing supplies together. For a device that depends on consumables, both affect the patient experience and the cost of support.

From this project

What I learned.

  1. 01

Design for the refill, not just the device.

Getting a meter is one step. Buying test strips is a recurring need. Plan for both when designing the patient offer and its costs.

  2. 02

Eligibility does not tell you how a device is used.

A prescription can qualify someone for a benefit. It does not show how often they use the meter. Report those as separate things.
